BURNS ILLUSTRATED - 1795-1925

The Calgary Burns Club celebrated its 25th anniversary by publishing an attractive volume containing 120 carefully selected illustrations of the poems and songs of Robert Burns. The commentator, Dr. Bob Carnie, has selected illustrations that enlighten Burnsians about the poet's best-loved poems, immortal songs and less well known odes, satires and elegies. The volume provides illustrations of all the standard favourites, such as The Cotters Saturday Night, Tam O' Shanter, and The Twa Dogs. Serious planning has gone into ensuring that both by their placement and generous size, the 100 black and white illustrations are available to the reader in close proximity to the relevant text. The book also contains 20 attractive colour plates, including examples of typical cover designs, landscapes, and figures associated with many of the best poems and songs. Works of Scottish, English and American artists, working in media as diverse as water-colours, oils, etching, lithograph, wood-cut and pen and ink are represented, There is also a separate print, suitable for framing, of a J. E. Christie painting of Tam O' Shanter. A set of biographies of the individual artists represented, and a brief bibliographical guide to sources, completes the volume.

The Author: Robert Hay Carnie, M.A., Ph.D., was educated at St. Andrews University, and held posts at the Universities of London, St. Andrews, Dundee and Ife (Nigeria), before coming to the University of Calgary. He is now Professor Emeritus in English Literature at Calgary.

The study is issued in a  limited edition of 300 copies, well over halfr of which was sold in a pre-publication offer. the remaining copies are available for $175.00Can. per copy  plus shipping, plus GST (in Canada) and can be purchased by contacting the store.

Purchase proceeds from this book go to the Calgary Burns Club    (not for profit).
