As an alternate to a long kilted skirt for formal wear, a lady often wears a tartan sash to complement her escorts highland dress. Sashes are available in light or medium weight fabric, and may be finished with a rosette, or left plain. They are worn pinned at the waist, with the sash across the right shoulder, unless the lady is the wife of a clan chief or a Scottish Country Dancer, when it is worn across the left shoulder. The sash is pinned at the shoulder with a sash brooch, a smaller version of a man’s plaid brooch. For a man who does not feel comfortable in the kilt, an alternate is to wear a tartan bow tie and cummerbund with a dark business suit for a semi-formal occasion, or with a tuxedo for a formal occasion. These items are made with medium weight fabric, and require one yard of fabric. For casual wear, a tartan tie in the wearer’s clan, or in an appropriate district tartan can be worn. We carry a full line of available tartan ties.
