A man’s kilt is usually made from medium weight (approx. 13 oz) fabric. However pipe bands may opt for a heavier weight (15-16 oz) or even full military weight (18-19 oz). Four yards of double-width material is usually required, but additional material may be required for extra heavy builds, or to accommodate off-centred setts. A kilt should reach just above the kneecap, and we use a three inch rise above the waist (rather than the normal two inch rise) to ensure that the kilt will show properly when worn with a short jacket style such as a Prince Charlie. The kilt may be pleated in the standard fashion, while shows the sett across the pleats, or in the regimental style, which is pleated to the stripe of the sett. As a finishing touch, particularly for formal evening wear, a plaid may be worn. We recommend a half-plaid (drummer’s plaid) which is belted at the waist and is worn across the left shoulder, attached to the jacket epaulette, and pinned by a plaid brooch. Unless a lady is a piper or highland dancer, she does not wear a kilt. A ladies’ kilted skirt is pleated, but without the deep pleats of the kilt. We suggest 11 0z fabric as a standard weight, but 13 oz may also be used. Approximately two yards of double-width fabric is required, but again additional material may be necessary to accommodate build or sett. The normal skirt length is to the knee, at the wearer’s discretion. A ladies’ long kilt is the recommended style for evening wear. Three yards of double-width fabric is required, again subject to build and sett. The long skirt should just clear the floor when the wearer is barefoot. All our kilts, plaids and skirts are made up in Calgary by our own kilt-maker. The illustrations portray the kilt and plaid, and the two styles of ladies skirts.
