A kilt pin is worn on the lower outer edge of the kilt apron. While mainly decorative, it does serve to maintain the position of the apron. The pin is attached to the apron only, and does not go through the modesty panel below. Pewter kilt pins displaying the wearer’s clan crest are very popular, but there is a wide range of different styles available, ranging from a simple blanket pin to quite ornate silver pins, often topped by semi-precious gemstones such as topaz or amethyst. Various styles of brooches are available to attach and complement a man’s plaid or ladies’ sash. Usually these brooches feature a large semi-precious gemstone such as topaz or amethyst as a focal point. The illustrations show a partial range of kilt pins and brooches available.
