The Scottish Shoppe

A sgian dubh, literally a ‘black knife’, is worn tucked in the top of the sock. Although the knife blade is finished, the sgian dubh is entirely decorative, and should always be worn with the sheath in place. Sgain dubhs generally have black composite or ebony hilts, from which the knife takes its name, but staghorn hilts are becoming increasingly popular.

The dirk is not very common outside pipe band circles. As with the sgian dubh, the dirk is entirely decorative, and should be treated as such. It is worn suspended from the waistbelt.

The illustrations show some of the sgian dubhs and dirks readily available.
